Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for two deputy coverage chiefs to help lead our Life & Work coverage. The role of deputy coverage chief at its core is about helping editors and reporters conceptualize, dig up and deliver ambitious, smart journalism on topics that engage our subscribers and attract new audiences. The mission takes numerous forms in the day-to-day -- leading projects or major coverage themes, talking through stories with editors and strategizing with reporters, and helping determine the best ways to tell stories and explore big ideas.

You will have myriad other responsibilities, including working with strategy, data and SEO, generating ideas and driving daily coverage. You will help coordinate coverage across bureaus, coverage areas, geographies and platforms; work closely with video, audio, graphics, photo and strategy colleagues; help manage planning, promotion and packaging of coverage; and edit copy. Your role involves working with editors on all our platforms, as well as senior newsroom leaders, to ensure that our coverage meets standards and enjoys maximum digital reach.

We are looking for a highly digital, enterprising editor with a passion for coverage that dissects the ways people spend their money and time. You are an accomplished journalist with experience delivering exclusive stories, finding fresh angles off the news and producing high-metabolism, high-quality coverage that brings new audiences to the Journal. You take creative approaches to storytelling, conceptualizing and executing coverage in new formats; you may be a visual journalist with a strong background in new story forms. You are intellectually curious and comfortable working across a range of subjects. You are a problem solver and a coach who helps develop talent and inspires success. You are highly organized and excel at bulletproof copy. You live the Journal's values in your handling of stories and reporting. Being a good colleague isn't a nice-to-have; it's a must.

While you will likely start remotely, the job is based in New York and reports to Nikki Waller, Life & Work coverage chief.

You will:
  • Guide daily coverage, working with bureaus to jump on news and elevate stories;
  • Help drive ideas with reporters and bureaus, and ensure stories and packages remain on track and on topic;
  • Edit stories;
  • Work across bureaus and coverage areas on topics that cut across our newsroom;
  • Help develop new features like guides, courses, newsletters, interactives and tools;
  • Incorporate audience data into story planning and work with social, programming and strategy colleagues to ensure maximum reach.

You have:
  • 5+ years of experience in an editing role, either running reporters, areas of coverage or visuals teams;
  • Experience working with reporters or producers to develop ideas and coverage;
  • Excellent line editing and headline-writing skills, ideally with a specialty in news features;
  • Experience working on digital platforms and new forms of storytelling;
  • Coaching skills on and off-deadline, and the ability to keep teams focused and positive.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and examples of your work. The application deadline is July 2.
