Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced and creative leader in digital news graphics and/or news design to join our award-winning team of visual journalists to drive innovative storytelling with graphics, interactives and multimedia. You will provide storytelling guidance and art direction on digital news projects of different sizes from start to finish across coverage areas and digital platforms. You will help provide focus and shape to stories that might include several collaborators, including other visual journalists, reporters and editors. You will stay abreast of all of the technical factors that go into creating digital journalism and how that intersects with the art direction of graphical articles. You will support the department as needed on broader leadership work, such as creating and implementing new workflows and processes. We're looking for someone who is endlessly curious and comfortable in a role at the intersection of journalism, design, and technology.

While you may start this job remotely, you will eventually be based either in our New York or D.C. office. You will report to the Graphics Director, who is based in New York.

You Will:
  • Work closely with the Graphics Director to prioritize stories that require special visual direction. Stories may range from faster turnaround to longer enterprise work.
  • Work with visual staff and the broader newsroom to identify and shape best topics, themes, and story approaches that lend themselves to ambitious visual storytelling.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors and other visual journalists to generate ideas and build stories for digital audiences across WSJ platforms and external platforms.
  • There will be opportunities to report, research, and create your own visual stories that might be original pitches, assigned by an editor, or collaborations with other reporters
  • Create graphics and visual projects with flexibility around deadlines.
  • Contribute to reviewing and providing art direction and story feedback on visual stories that are created in the department.
  • Stay abreast, and ahead of, visual trends and techniques that can be applied to the evolving nature of digital storytelling.

You Have:
  • Ideally at least 4-6 years of experience in a newsroom, and must have excellent news judgement.
  • Exceptional visual skills and demonstrable information design knowledge around how editorial judgement intersects with layout, typography, color, interaction design, and visual formats.
  • Skilled with Adobe tools for storyboarding, prototyping and designing visual stories.
  • A good understanding of the array of information graphics formats, such as data visualization types, cartography, photography, and 3D.
  • Good knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its libraries, such as D3.
  • At least one or two visual/technical specialties that might include cartography, or data journalism and associated tools.
  • Good knowledge of the production work that goes into designing for multiple screen sizes and the technical nuances of the digital landscape, for example, requirements of AMP or Apple News.
  • Strong communication skills and experience managing projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working on a deadline and available when unexpected news breaks.
  • Must be very organized and able to schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely.
