Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a New York-based Community Editor to oversee our audience conversation experience across our native platforms and to foster meaningful dialogue among our readers and journalists.

This is a multi-faceted job that requires strong news and editorial judgment, digital community building, conversation moderation, project management and strategic thinking. You will help bring our audience together around our journalism and incorporate those contributions into our coverage when appropriate.

You will work hand-in-hand with WSJ news, strategy and engineering colleagues. You will be a partner to WSJ's live journalism team, which runs our events, to make the most of our reader communities within our digital products. You will report to the New Audiences & Community Deputy Editor, and you will use industry trends, technology developments and data/analytics to help create our digital community strategy. While you will likely start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.

The job will involve managing the audience voices team, which moderates our comments section and participates in other virtual community projects. Central to the role is leadership and organization around consistent moderation and around raising the level of discourse among our audience. You will use solid news judgment and knowledge of audience data in decision-making and leverage the depth and breadth of our journalism to engage audiences. The position also requires a deep understanding of moderation tools like Coral.

The Community Editor manages the process of opening stories to moderation, in coordination with editors and coverage chiefs; for overseeing and writing reader prompts on those articles; for scheduling the team's weekly calendar; and for working with the New Audiences & Community Chief and Deputy Editor on the editorial vision related to audience conversation. The Community Editor will also moderate several hours a day to stay in touch with our audience.

You will:
  • Exercise strong judgment in packaging and presenting conversation alongside news.
  • Help connect the content with the audience, the audience with each other and the audience with our journalists.
  • Demonstrate a command of editing and conversational writing to engage readers.
  • Understand the different opportunities for commenting around breaking news as well as enterprise.
  • Be comfortable with technical concepts and eager to be helpful in technical planning around product features related to audience conversation.
  • Lead with empathy, both for our audience and your team members. You will help your direct reports produce their very best work and support their career development.

You have:
  • At least 3+ years of experience with news and audience development or audience commenting work.
  • An attention to detail. Takes pride in and ownership of one's work.
  • A positive attitude. Can motivate team members and stay future-focused and positive when under deadline pressure.
  • The ability to collaborate with other groups and employ excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change and embrace experimentation.
  • A level of comfort balancing multiple tasks and responsibilities while meeting deadlines.
