Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal Opinion section is looking for a New York-based senior audio producer to lead our growing podcasting team. We're seeking a high-energy, collaborative team player to produce podcasts that reflect the perspectives of The Wall Street Journal editorial board, columnists and a broad set of opinion contributors. The senior audio producer reports to and partners with the Opinion Managing Editor to produce high-quality, compelling opinion podcasts and series for a highly engaged, intelligent audience, and will work closely with the WSJ Audio team on execution of these projects. This person will work across several podcast formats, including panel, interview and feature programs. This position requires a professional background in audio journalism, strong experience across several podcasting formats, and demonstrated production skills in both the studio and the field.

This role will be a key leader on a small team. As such, we're looking for a hands-on audio professional who not only works to develop ideas and hone audio strategy, but is capable of, and enthusiastic about, getting their hands dirty by leading production and jumping in on edits. We also expect in time that the senior audio producer will develop new and innovative format and content ideas that will extend the brand's audio offerings and attract a new and broader audience. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable reacting to viewer feedback and data to produce content that resonates with current and new audiences. You will be a strong and collaborative communicator, and have an ability to see projects with multiple stakeholders and participants through to completion.

Responsibilities include:
  • Manage a small team of audio producers dedicated to producing high-quality podcasts in a variety of formats.
  • Lead and support production of podcasts working remotely, in studio and on location
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of production
  • Research topics of interest to The Wall Street Journal's Opinion audience, with a focus on politics, business, markets, economics, technology and science
  • Source timely news and archival audio
  • Record remote interviews and studio-based 2-ways
  • Cut tape and edit full episodes
  • Coordinate with Opinion's managing editor to plan tapings at conferences and events
  • Book interview guests, as well as plan and execute remote interviews
  • Work with editorial writers, columnists and editors to share their reporting in audio form
  • Propose new and original ideas for programming
  • Fact-check and help ensure that we meet all journalistic and legal standards
  • Pitch in when needed to work late hours and weekends, as news developments may warrant

Strong candidates will have the following skills and experience:
  • At least 5 - 7 years of experience serving as an audio producer in a daily news environment, preferably at a global news organization
  • A passion for telling politics, business, markets, tech and science stories in creative ways
  • Experience working on news, narrative and magazine podcasts
  • A track record of producing quality audio content efficiently under tight deadline constraints
  • Professional-level understanding of Adobe Audition and Pro Tools software
  • The ability to communicate clearly with exceptional written and collaboration skills, excellent news sense and a keen interest in current events, U.S. and world politics, business, and economics
  • Have worked with professional journalists in the past and have the ability and confidence to work closely with writers, editors and contributors to develop their audio presentation skills.
  • Experience working with and coaching well-known talent, and can constructively critique their work.
  • It is essential that candidates be familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands

You will be based in New York City and report to Lena Bell, Managing Editor, Opinion.
