Job Details

Newsweek is looking for a reporter to join the science desk. The position will involve producing news stories and features based around science, health and technology topics.

The ideal candidate will be able to source, pitch and write stories based around current events and the latest scientific research, with a strong understanding of digital journalism and the needs of a fast-paced newsroom.

They should be able to use social media and trending platforms to come up with original articles, conduct in-depth interviews with key figures within different fields of science, and forward-plan for events.

Reporters with an interest/experience in certain areas should make this clear in their cover letter. This may include cryptocurrencies, gaming, specific areas of health, space, cybersecurity, big tech and alternative social media platforms.

While particular areas of interest are welcomed, the successful candidate will also be versatile and confident writing across a range of topics.

Science qualifications are not a requirement, and reporters with an interest in and experience reporting on the areas our team covers who are looking to specialise are encouraged to apply.

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.

This is a full-time position with the ability to work from our London Canary Wharf office or remotely from home anywhere in the UK. All staff are temporarily working from home due to the COVID-19 situation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write several news stories per day
  • Pitch, research and write original stories and features
  • Check facts and sources and ensure content is of the highest possible standard
  • Work with editors to ensure your work meets house style

Requirements:

  • Experience in a reporting role for a reputable organization
  • Experience covering science, health and technology topics
  • Capable of working to tight deadlines

Desirable:

  • Experience in a science or health reporter role
  • Creative thinking with the ability to think outside the box
