Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a photo editor with great range, experience and journalistic integrity, who is able to produce complex photo assignments, has an ability to think conceptually about stories, perform strong agency and social media research, and work effectively within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world. You will join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors, with a focus on coverage in The Wall Street Journal's core areas of business, careers and financial journalism.

You will start this job remotely, but will ultimately be based in our New York office. You will report to the Deputy Photography Director, Business.

You Will:
  • Work quickly and accurately on news and enterprise stories, collaborating with the newsroom's editors, visual teams and section chiefs.
  • Curate and produce visually-led stories in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic and other needs as stories develop. Work in our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.
  • Photography assigning: Commission original content, working with photographers, editors and reporters to tell narrative, investigative and enterprise stories on all platforms including mobile and print. Strong portrait assigning required.
  • Conceptual storytelling: Work with art directors and editors on ideas for photo or other illustrative approaches to content for all platforms.
  • Follow department guidelines and safety protocols in working with photographers and subjects.
  • Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism
  • Pitch visually innovative and original projects and approaches to digital story productions, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
  • Work with platform and off-platform editors to surface the work strategically across all platforms.
  • Manage budget effectively with quarterly check-ins with supervisors.

You Have:
  • Must have at least 3 years experience in a photo editing role, an enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgement.
  • Proven deep research skills and experience with news gathering and research tools including Storyful, Factiva, Google Earth and DigitalGlobe
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools
  • Some knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript useful.
  • A self-starter who can work independently as well as with a team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and an ability to balance short and long term projects across different sections.
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
