RT.com, Sports Journalist with Political Edge (Remote)
You used to love sport.
You still do, but it is becoming harder as you see it hijacked by ideological causes, disrupted by Covid-19, commodified by woke corporations, and flooded by inane Twitter grandstanding from those who never actually watch a game.
At a time when mainstream media journalists are terrified to say a word out of line, you want to fight for the things you cherish.
This is your chance.
But you are not a radio call-in blowhard, ranting about the same five talking points endlessly.
You can give a nuanced dissection of every major issue, present an elegant argument, write an immersive feature.
You also still care about sport for its own sake, and want to report it straight.
So you won’t be just a columnist or analyst – there are previews, match summaries and reaction pieces to be published.
You will need to monitor every event, break every news story in minutes, and scan social media accounts for easy stories. We care about clicks.
But as your articles go out to our politically astute and massive audience - 500 million page views and 3 billion video views in English in 2020 - you never have to write what you don’t believe in again.
You are a professional journalist. We are not looking for amateurs with an opinion, but established writers who can seamlessly fit into and push forward a successful team. News writers switching from another field will be considered, conditional on the next criterion.
You are a genuine sports obsessive – no frauds. You know the histories, the beefs, the angles, the rules, the techniques. You don’t need to look it up, because you were there in the stadium. We built our fanbase on combat sports, but want to do more football and US sports. This is likely not the best opportunity for someone who is all about just English football, or any one sport (though we would love a chess obsessive).
You are creative and self-driven. Much of the time you pitch your own ideas, claim the plum assignments, develop the angles, and make sure that they work for the audience.
You have stamina for the grind. This is a high-tempo job, where team members are expected to produce a large volume of articles that are right at the first time of asking. More time is allocated for thinkpieces, but this is not a summertime reverie of a job.
You will be working full-time and remotely. You will start on a rota, but as you integrate, we can offer flexibility, and build your schedule around the events you cover. Exceptional freelance candidates will be considered, but this is not the primary objective of this search.
The hiring process may include an open-ended written test, and potential live trial days, to ensure the fit is comfortable for both sides.
There will be every chance to take on more editorial responsibilities and suggest strategic direction for the desk.
While this is first and foremost a writing job, it is closely integrated with our video and social media side, so there will be plenty of opportunity to create native online content, if you want to work in different formats and build your professional profile.
