AMAKA Studio is a digital multimedia publisher dedicated to developing content for women, by women from Africa and the African diaspora.

AMAKA is a multimedia platform that develops and curates nuanced topics ranging from fashion, beauty, entertainment, politics, social issues, women’s rights, and empowerment as well as arts and culture.

With few platforms solely dedicated to capturing authentic stories from the continent, AMAKA aims to fill the gap by adopting a digital-first, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural approach to content creation, storytelling, and editorial production, offering our audience with purposeful and insightful stories that represent various African and Afro-diasporic women communities. We serve the vision and voice of the modern African woman.

We are looking for a Managing Editor to join our team to lead and manage AMAKA’s operational and editorial tasks.

You will commission writers, ideate and contribute stories, and oversee daily happenings on the site.

The ideal candidate is someone who is incredibly process-oriented, operational, data driven, is able to work in a very fast paced environment and can lead, execute and manage editorial projects and creative concepts efficiently and effectively.

We're also looking for someone who can manage junior writers , commission freelance writers and has a very strong understanding of the editorial and newsroom process.

An ideal candidate must have the following:

  • At least 6 years of experience working in editorial.
  • Prior experience as a managing editor or a relevant role.
  • Previous experience managing a team of editors and staff writers.
  • Previous experience managing and overseeing production schedules and editorial calendars.
  • Experience managing sub-editors
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Possess problem solving abilities.
  • Good eye for digital trends.
  • Strong understanding of data and data analytics tools is preferred.
  • Significant experience working with clients and delivering branded content
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to deadline
  • Plan and manage daily editorial operations.
  • Exceptional copywriting and editing skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Highly process oriented and operational.
  • Strong multimedia journalism skills across print, video, audio, experiential and social.
  • Knowledge of AP Style Guidelines.
  • Ability to ideate and develop stories from conception to completion is preferred.
  • Ability to pitch and assign stories across video, audio and photography
  • Strong understanding of branded content.
  • Experience managing and producing shoots and productions.
  • Extensive experience planning, assigning and editing content.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Comfortability working in a fast-paced startup environment.


Job description:

  • Strong interest, knowledge and passion for African and Afro-diasporic pop cultures as well as current cultural, political, social and creative trends and affairs happening across Africa and the African Diaspora.
  • Collaborate with the Editor in Chief to guide the editorial development of the AMAKA brand.
  • Assign reporting tasks to staff writers and contributors.
  • Set editorial goals to meet company objectives.
  • Lead, guide, manage and direct reporters and assigned feature writers in developing news stories and features.
  • Edit and contribute content copy in accordance to the established procedures and standards outlined in the editorial style guide and calendar.
  • Work in collaboration with with the Digital Marketing Manager to manage weekly newsletters
  • Collaborate with the Editor in Chief to build AMAKA's editorial infrastructure.
  • Regularly write news briefs and other short-form articles.
  • Work closely with staff writers and other editors.
  • Conduct analytical reports for editorial and company wide meetings.
  • Determine and decide on editorial stories in consultation with writers.
  • Develop, manage and execute AMAKA’s editorial programmes across video, audio and experiential.
  • Provide technical guidance with regard to editorial, social media, design, photography and content.
  • Ensure compliance of best practices and standards in journalism and digital media.
  • Operational and financial responsibility for commissioning writers, producers and content creators.
  • Experience managing editorial budgets.
  • Develop creative editorial themes, timely topics and issues related to women from Africa and the diaspora.
  • Manage deadlines and deliver on-time weekly content.
  • Control schedules and enforce deadlines.
  • Develop monthly reports on AMAKA’s editorial performance.
  • Host and organize live panel discussions, interviews, webinars and podcast sessions with key public figures and influencers.
  • Develop talent and influencer relationships for event activations and editorial stories.
  • Identify and recruit viable candidates for contributing roles.
  • Act as an ambassador for AMAKA, delivering AMAKA's brand story, values and mission to drive brand awareness.
  • Attend events on behalf of AMAKA.
