Overview

  • The Editorial Director will play a key role in i’s newsroom, overseeing our journalism across all sections and ensuring that it excels across i’s digital and print products.
  • They will manage a number of major section editors and lead the morning news conference.
  • They will work with product owners – Head of Digital, Head of Print, iweekend editor, and other senior execs – to create journalism with great impact that encourages more people to become habitual readers of i.


The Role

  • The Editorial Director manages i’s overall journalism strategy and content plan.
  • The role involves a ‘test and learn’ approach using data to hone and adapt our journalism.
  • The Editorial Director leads daily scheduling for print and digital, in conjunction with section editors, and works with product leads and the Editor-in-chief.
  • The Editorial Director is the main link between the journalism and product teams and an influential voice on product development. They have ultimate responsibility for delivering quality journalism to each of our products at the right time to support our publishing strategy.
  • The Editorial Director is expected to ensure brand cohesion and alignment across sections and products.
  • The Editorial Director sits on i’s editorial executive, and will work with other execs and senior management on editorial strategy.
  • On the management side, the role also includes oversight of rota admin by section editors, tracking commissioning budgets and reporting to the executive board.
  • This is a pivotal role providing oversight of editorial recruitment at a time when we are investing in i’s journalism.


Summary

  • Reports into the Editor-in-chief
  • Manages a number of major section editors
  • Ensures our journalism fits i’s brand across all sections and products
  • Leads morning and afternoon editorial conferences, discussion of schedules, and oversees the relationships between section heads and product owners. Leads scheduling for digital and print products after morning conference.
  • Continuously reviews data to ensure the newsroom is serving our audience, however they consume our journalism
  • Communicates performance of i's editorial team to the wider execs e.g. through the use of dashboards
  • Oversees rota management by section editors
  • Takes key role in editorial recruitment, working alongside Managing Editor and relevant section editor
  • Works closely with senior editorial execs to create brand journalism across all products to drive audience growth and engagement
  • Oversees section management of commissioning budgets and reports on progress to the executive board
