Job Details

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a New York-based Community Editor to oversee our audience conversation experience across our native platforms and to foster meaningful dialogue among our readers and journalists.

This is a multi-faceted job involving strong news judgment, digital community building, conversation moderation, story editing, project management, audience engagement, data analysis, strategic thinking, multimedia and product decision-making.

You will help bring our audience together around our journalism and incorporate those contributions into our coverage when appropriate.

You will report to the New Audiences Chief. You will work together closely, using industry trends, technology developments and data/analytics to help create our digital community strategy.

You will work with the Journal's product, design and engineering teams to create the best possible experience for conversation on WSJ.com and WSJ's mobile apps.

These conversations are mainly based in our comments section but we also have new features in development that will create other forums for virtual community.

You will also look for opportunities to expand the conversation into other products, such as newsletters.

You will partner with our live journalism team, which runs our events, to make the most of our reader communities within our digital products.

The job will involve managing the audience voice team, which moderates our comments section and participates in other virtual community projects.

Central to the role is leadership and organization around consistent moderation and around raising the level of discourse among our audience.

You will manage the process for monthly data audits; for managing which articles, including breaking news, are to be prioritized for moderation in coordination with editors and coverage chiefs; and for leading the editorial vision on product changes related to audience conversation.

You should also be excited to handle some moderation each week to keep in touch with the conversation that is occurring amongst our readers.

This role requires proficiency with digital publishing tools, data analysis and a command of newsroom workflows.

We also ask that you have a deep understanding of moderation tools like Coral.

Strong writing skills are helpful. Ability to be available during weekends, if something arises with a team member on moderation duty, is important.

You Will:

  • Exercise strong judgment in packaging and presenting conversation alongside news.
  • Help connect the content with the audience, the audience with each other and the audience with our journalists.
  • Conduct monthly data audits and develop reports to be shared with newsroom leadership.
  • Engage readers with conversational writing and editing.
  • Understand the different opportunities for comment around breaking/enterprise news.
  • Leverage social channels to enhance on-platform conversation and bring in new voices.

You Have / You Are:

  • Experience with high-volume commenting platforms and smart filtering models.
  • Comfortable with technical concepts and eager to be helpful in technical planning around product features related to audience conversation.
  • Positive attitude. Can motivate team members and stay future-focused and positive when under deadline pressure.
  • Recognize the Journal's core digital audience and its needs and expectations.
  • Empathy for our audience and a desire to understand their many perspectives.
