Gorkana Meets…John Simon

Published: Mar 12, 2014

Tell us a bit about your blogs, John Simon Daily and Haute Diary, and what they cover. What makes your perspective on celebrities, fashion, and events unique?

  • John Simon Daily is an online lifestyle publication that covers everything ranging from restaurants to red carpet events, travel, and product reviews.

  • Haute Diary provides all of the latest in fashion and beauty news, including Fashion Week reviews and gift guides.

Both websites are unique because of our attention to detail and honesty. We pride ourselves on publishing well-written stories and content that keep our readers intrigued.

It is always a humbling experience to be one of the few bloggers invited to an exclusive red carpet event and to stand next to major print publications.

What inspired you to start John Simon Daily? How has it developed from the personal blog you introduced in 2009 into the major website it is now?

My blog actually started as a hobby with no name at the time. In fact, it was on Myspace! With the power of networking, I had the pleasure of attending a lot of industry events and would simply post pictures along with a few words on my Myspace blog. My friends loved seeing what it was like inside exclusive events along with pictures of me with celebrities.

Later on, I had the idea to move my blog to its own domain. I called it John Simon Daily because the blog would be about me and what I do on a daily basis. In its first year, the blog caught the attention of fashion and lifestyle publicists who reached out to me about their clients and invited me to events. The site grew so fast that two years later I expanded into women’s fashion and beauty with the launch of Haute Diary.

Tell us about your blogs’ audience.

Readers of John Simon Daily and Haute Diary are global, ranging from the United States and Canada to Asia and Europe. They are educated and in the key demographic of 18- to 49-year-olds.

What have been some of your favorite people, places, or trends to cover?

Paris Fashion Week has a special place in my heart. It’s humbling to be invited to cover Paris Fashion Week as an independent blogger. Being fortunate enough to travel there and attend some of my favorite designers’ fashion shows has been the highlight of my blogging career.

You’ve been known to appear at many exclusive VIP events in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. If your readers could win a free pass into any one of them, which would you recommend attending? What are some tantalizing stories you can share?

I would recommend a movie premiere because of the overall experience of seeing the craziness that is the red carpet and countless star sightings. Then, you get to relax and enjoy a film followed by the after-party, which are always a big production: everyone lets loose, including the celebrities.

Tell us about some of the marketing and social media opportunities you’ve worked with for John Simon Daily. How can PRs help you with your blog’s content?

We are on all of the top social media platforms. I also love to feature fun and innovative events I’ve attended as well as product reviews on John Simon Daily. I am always looking for the next big thing and enjoy interviewing creative people from different fields.

If you could trade places for a day with one famous figure, either one you’ve covered or someone else you admire, who would it be?

I would love to switch places with the President. It would be the ultimate challenge for me. I have very tough skin and can handle any situation, and I admire anyone who can constantly deal with such pressure and scrutiny.

When you’re not blogging or exploring the metropolitan social scene, what other projects occupy your time? What else do you do for fun?

I actually enjoy the simple things like going to the movies and being around my close circle of friends. One of my favorite things to do is to “book a ticket and leave,” meaning randomly book a vacation and go some place I’ve never been before. I love to travel and explore the world.
